The 267 North American and International entries in the 2000 TLMI Awards Competition bested last year's entry draw by 33 percentmaking victory even sweeter for this year's honorees. "We were glad to see the increased amount of entries," says RotoMetrics' Steve Lee, chair of the Awards Competition Committee. Quantity was up, but so was overall quality, illustrated in part by the definitive rise in multi-process label entries. "There was lots of good competition," states Lee. "Very subtle technical differences determined the awards."
Flexographic printed work, in particular, showed it could contend quite handily with the high quality prowess of other processes. Judges gave the Best of Show nod to Hells Canyon, a flexo-printed, foil stamped, laminated wine label produced by Adams Tag & Label Ltd. Lee calls the label "a very good piece of flexography." Citing its perfect registration throughout printing, hot stamping, and laminating, he adds, "It was technically better than anything we saw."
Another stand-out technical performance came from Tapp Technologies, which nabbed four first place awards and four honorable mentions across the Multi-Process and Offset categories. The next-highest number of honors went to Tape & Label Engineering, which earned one first place and four honorable mentions, demonstrating its deftness at flexographic label printing as well as flexible packaging printing.
