PPC Distributes Safety Boxscore Awards

The Safety Boxscore awards, presented at Paperboard Packaging Council's (PPC) Spring Outlook and Strategies Conference, held April 3-5, are given to PPC member companies based on the cumulative number of hours worked the previous year without an OSHA-recordable injury. “Safety is of utmost importance in the packaging industry and it is a testament to our members that such a large group can claim this achievement year after year,” expressed Brian Chaisson, director of industry benchmarking at PPC.

Independent Carton Group Celebrates Thirty Years

Members from across the nation gathered in Charleston to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Independent Carton Group with a special celebration that coincided with the group’s general membership meeting. Events included a private tour of the Kraft paper mill owned by KapStone Paper and Packaging, an ICG vendor since 2002, a historic carriage tour experience, and a gourmet Mediterranean meal at Sermet’s.

Reducing Ink Costs

Two converters, Albéa and Thoro Packaging, have saved a significant amount of money through the Sun Chemical Dispenser Program, a system that provides in-house ink dispensing and gives printers the ability to mix the exact amount of ink that they need when they need it. Package printers that participate in the program must agree to purchase a minimum annual amount of Sun Chemical bases and inks and in return receive a GFI Mx12 dispenser that provides spot color accuracy to within 0.001/lb.

US-based Thoro Packaging has announced that it is converting to carbon neutral printing with the natureOffice programme and will offer customers the option to certify all print jobs as carbon neutral. The company has partnered with natureOffice to implement operational changes including how it purchases raw materials, uses recycled paper, disposes of waste and purchases carbon credits, all aimed at giving customers the environmental and cost savings. According to the company, converting to carbon neutral printing offers customers multiple benefits and an additional sustainable packaging option.
