True to its history of introducing new technology to the printing world, drupa 2012 offered plenty of new things, including a great deal of packaging specific offerings in printing and finishing technologies.

Presstek recently partnered with Highcon at drupa 2012 to demonstrate the value of high-quality, short-run offset printing combined with digital cutting and creasing for the folding carton market. Sheets printed on a Presstek DI digital offset press were converted using the Highcon Euclid and made available to visitors during the show.

Coming out of drupa, I see history repeating itself for digital package printing. In the early 1990s Indigo entered the narrow web labels sector with their Omnius digital press which paved the way for single pass digital printing of labels. Also in those early days Xeikon, offered the DCP/32S a dry toner press and others introduced UV inkjet single pass systems.

Our last day at drupa ended up being full of promising packaging solutions, much more than we expected and we wished we could have extended our stay another few days.

A six-color Presstek 75DI digital offset press with an inline aqueous coater has been purchased by a large North America-based packaging converter. This marks one of the largest Presstek 75DI press orders to date.
