Here's How You Can Be Best of Show
It’s no easy task for a package or label to stand out in a crowd of 200 others, spanning all packaging segments and printing technologies. And if last year’s top entries in the packagePRINTING Excellence Awards are any indication, to be considered among the best, it means going above and beyond to achieve the print quality to impress our judging panel.
For example, last year’s Best of Show winner not only featured stunning printed graphics, it did so on a substrate known to be challenging to work with. According to Michael Eichler, director of print technology for KBA North America, the “Sunrise Growers Cherry Berry Organic” pouch submitted by ProAmpac, was particularly impressive due to the difficulty of achieving such high-quality graphics on this type of flexible film.
“It is printed in perfect register and excellent color on a thin, flexible and stretchable film,” Eichler said. “Printing on an inherently unstable substrate is difficult to begin with, achieving perfect register and color clarity tops if off.”
While the Sunrise Growers pouch reigned supreme, it did have some worthy opponents vying for the Best of Show title that also incorporated some creative printing and finishing attributes. Monvera Glass Décor took home second place overall for its direct printing on a bottle produced for Almanac Beer Company’s 2016 Grand Cru. What made this printing feat especially impressive is that the bottle features printing on its body, shoulder and neck, which can be particularly difficult in direct printing.
Finally, the third place overall entry demonstrated that helping a product stand out among its competition takes more than just pristine printing. This Kavi Reserve Coffee Blended Canadian Whisky label produced by ASL Print FX features extensive embellishments, including embossing, debossing and hot foil.
