Coatings are used for a multitude of purposes in package printing. They can provide overcoatings for aesthetic or protective finishes, undercoats that enhance ink interactions for unique looks, or anything in between. Many companies use coatings and ink/coating combinations to provide a distinct look and feel, improve product functionality, or reduce costs.

Protective Coats

Coatings are somewhat unsung heroes in the package-printing world. They provide many important functions, yet most people don’t even know they’re there. These people don’t care either—except that if the coatings weren’t there, they might not like the label or package as much, might even complain about it, or worse yet, might not buy the product. Whoa, Nellie! “Houston, We’ve got a problem.” “Iceberg dead ahead!” Now, we’ve got somebody’s heart pumpin’. Coatings to the rescue No, coatings can’t help much when it comes to world calamities, but if the heart that’s “pumpin’” happens to be a product manager, now we’re playing in

A Coat of Armor

Coating technologies sometimes seem like they can do it all, from the mundane to the smart technology applications that are opening up creative opportunities for package printers and consumer products companies alike. Whether it’s water-based, solvent-based, or UV/EB curing, coatings are helping companies save money and sell product—in anyone’s book, a pretty good combination of benefits. Each of the coating technologies has an important role to play in package printing. INX International manufactures all three primary types—water, solvent, and energy cured—but Davant Davis, INX national accounts manager, aqueous solutions, throws his hat in the ring for water-based systems offering the best growth potential. Free Product Trial Available for UV Coating
October 31, 2005

NEWARK, N.J.—Craig Adhesives and Coatings announced today a free trial program for its 1077M-3 coating product used by sheet-fed offset printers running hybrid inks, according to Howard Ragin, president. This new trial program will allow printers to order a free five-gallon sample to compare with their current products. Using 1077M-3, they will print glossier, higher quality products. "The new UV coating is superior to its rivals as it provides the highest level of gloss in the market," said Ragin. "We've been testing the product for years and it's consistently the best in its class. In fact, we're so confident it is better than

Coating is paperboard's key to functionality and printability. STRONG, BRIGHT, AND value-added is the composition of many a woman's dream man. It's also what consumer product companies (CPCs) are looking for in their paperboard packaging. And for the most part, that's what they're getting—a resilient substrate that's brighter and more functional than ever. Improved paperboard materials continue to hit the marketplace, spurring and supporting a slow but steady growth of the substrate. While it's still rebounding from a low base in 2002, the growth is expected to climb steadily at 2.8 percent per year to more than $35 billion in 2007, according to Corrugated

The Root of the Problem
April 1, 2004

A troubleshooting guide to coatings and adhesives. by Kate Sharon, Associate Editor COATINGS AND ADHESIVES are the unsung heroes of the packaging world. They protect a package and its goods, while making it look and perform exceedingly better than it would otherwise. But when a problem arises in the application or formulation of a coating or adhesive, those protective, enhancing, and functional substances can be the sole reason for a job's rejection. To get to the root of such costly issues and for ways to prevent them, packagePRINTING recently asked industry suppliers for their advice. Coatings Coatings play a very critical role in
