The American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (AMERIPEN; www.ameripen.org) announced Dec. 15 the retirement of the organization’s president, Joan Pierce of Colgate-Palmolive Company, along with related changes to its Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Succeeding Pierce as president of the industry trade organization that advocates for environmentally and economically sound packaging policy improvements is Gail Tavill of ConAgra Foods, Inc., formerly the group’s vice president. Other changes to the AMERIPEN Executive Committee include Shanna Moore of DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers being named vice president, and Jeff Wooster of The Dow Chemical Company succeeding Moore as the

SGS International has become the 1000th DuPont™ Cyrel® FAST installation in the world, continuing the decade long growth of the flexographic packaging industry’s most popular and sustainably driven workflow. Introduced at DRUPA in 2000 and commercialized in 2001, the DuPont™ Cyrel® FAST system is a thermal flexographic plate processing system that requires no solvents or liquids of any kind. The 1000th machine has just been installed at the SGS facility in Florence, Kentucky. “We were one of the first Cyrel® FAST customers for DuPont and we now have 17 FAST units in plants around the globe,” said

A new online modeling tool from DuPont Packaging is said to enable brand owners and packaging converters to evaluate the total cost of flexible packaging that relies on sealing solutions to help protect the contents. Available online at sealant-value-estimator.dupont.com, DuPont’s Save (Sealant Value Estimator) calculates the total value in use of sealant alternatives, taking into consideration gains from productivity and losses due to inefficiencies, and waste from packaging failures that result from ineffective sealants. It also incorporates dynamic modeling capabilities that allow users to calculate break-even points on multiple inputs in order to make wiser, more sustainable choices. The

As the countdown to 2012 drupa begins, participants throughout the flexographic packaging industry are anticipating new technologies and processes that will become available in the near future. When DuPont introduced the DuPont™ Cyrel® Digital Imager (CDI), the first Cyrel® digital printing plate, and a fully digital prepress workflow at 1995 drupa , it could be argued that this was the single most important innovation in the flexographic process since the introduction of the first Cyrel® photopolymer printing plate in 1974. Just like gravure and offset lithography, flexography could now move away from film-based prepress workflows and implement a distributed

The North American FTA put ‘Color in Focus’ before an audience of nearly 300 flexographers during its recent annual Fall Conference. The assembly consisted largely of printers; but suppliers, pre-press technicians, consumer product companies, teachers and students were also represented as well. Co-chaired by Mark Mazur of DuPont Packaging Graphics and Dan Collins of Berry Plastics, the event took place in St Louis, Missouri, where 14 speakers and 34 conference exhibitors were present. The speakers were Mark Mazur, DuPont Packaging Graphics; Richard Black, All Printing Resources; Mark Samworth, EskoArtwork; Steve Upton, Chromix; Roy Bohnen, Epson America; Robb Frimming, Schawk

"The Packaging Awards program is an opportunity to celebrate how collaborating throughout the value chain can bring cost-effective innovation to the market to help solve the big issues," said Shanna Moore Cimplast uses DuPont™ Fusabond®, a polymer compatibilizer, to turn the waste into automotive lubricant bottles, rigid pipes and other products. With this process, more than 150,000 tons of empty agrochemical plastic bottles have been collected since 2002, saving about 374,000 barrels of crude oil and more than 160,000 tons of CO2 equivalents. "We are proud of Cimplast's work with DuPont and their considerable accomplishments on this mounting environmental
