Bemis Expands Retort Packaging Program
OSHKOSH, Wis.—As processors continue a steady transition to shelf-stable flexible and rigid packaging for a variety of foods, Bemis has furthered its position as a global leader with expanded retort packaging capabilities. A single-source supplier, Bemis offers one of the industry’s most comprehensive portfolios of self-manufactured shelf-stable materials and formats; a world-class retort lab with unique customer support and training opportunities; and innovative new packaging technologies.
Examples of Bemis’ next-level retort materials include breakthrough new self-venting technologies for microwave packaging; high-efficiency film with ultrasonic-compatible sealants; clear films that allow consumers to see the package contents; and easy-peel lidding structures with high-burst strength.
“Slowly but surely, retort flexible and rigid packaging is finding its place on North America’s grocery shelves,” says Dan Bornemann, market manager at Bemis Flexible Packaging–Milprint Division. “Today you’ll see foods including entrees, side dishes, baby foods, and even soup in shelf-stable flexible packaging. And because we expect more and more markets and applications to make the transition, we continue to invest in capabilities and technologies to support the growth.”
Bemis’s enhanced expertise in retort packaging is the result of the recent acquisition of Alcan Packaging Food Americas; increased North American manufacturing capabilities; and an expanded team of technical and market specialists. Turnkey go-to-market assistance includes a dedicated retort lab with extensive testing equipment and retort chambers for developmental projects; package prototyping and design; material sourcing; and head-turning rotogravure or flexo printing with special high-performance inks.
Bemis provides one of the widest offerings of retort systems and features available from one domestic packaging source, including flat three side sealed pouches, standup pouches, forming webs, and rigid trays with flexible lidding film. Popular consumer-requested features add convenience and ease of opening, including peelable films, directional tear features, perforated films for tear-off opening, and press-to-close zippers.
Bemis retort packaging structures are engineered from a leading array of self-manufactured sealants with ultra-high thermal stability, burst strength, and barrier. Materials include foil laminations and unsupported foil from 0.275 to 2.8 mils.
