Product Showcase: Coating and laminating - July 2014
Acucote offers a full line of pressure-sensitive, adhesive-coated products to satisfy the most demanding packaging applications. One fast-growing product is the instant redeemable coupon line, which the company believes is a market segment that can withstand economic fluctuations. The line is well-suited for rebates, discounts, bundling, new product launches and sharing sales information, assisting converters in maintaining sales and increasing profitability.
Comexi Nexus Line
Comexi’s NEXUS ML1 coating and laminating line can add laminates to a variety of packaging, including food and pharmaceutical packaging and labels. Laminates can be added in duplex and triplex configurations, and can be applied at a high speed. Trolley based coating units can be exchanged between jobs for rotogravure, flexography, semiflexo, PVdC and solventless coating applications.
Comexi’s NEXUS SL2 laminating machine works with solventless tapes and is outfitted with an ergonomically designed metering sleeve, to maximize job change speed. Its laminating unit consists of a steel heating cylinder, a smaller diameter cylinder coated with high density rubber and a counterpressure cylinder, allowing for even transparent laminating and eliminating air bubbles. The NEXUS SL2 is designed to be versatile, with unwinding and rewinding configurations with automatic or simple turrets.
FLEXcon’s custom topcoatings are available for numerous print technologies, digital included. For HP Indigo, the company provides packaging substrates for resealable closures and rigid, semi-squeeze container labels. With the DigiPRO HP Indigo-compatible topcoats, there is no need to coat on press or have products coated before printing. Nearly all of FLEXcon’s films can be topcoated, providing compatibility with HP Indigo Technology.
Heidelberg’s Saphira Coatings
Heidelberg’s Saphira Coatings line includes a variety of coatings for a variety of applications. The Saphira Coatings are high-performance, water-based and UV-curable coatings for the printing and converting industries that can service a full range of finishes, from high gloss to full matte. They can also be used with functional barrier coatings and with products that display specific resistance performance. The Saphira Low-Migration consumables are geared to the food packaging sector of the industry. These inks, coatings, fountain solutions and washing fluids eliminate or hinder migration to, or damage of, the food product within the packaging.
All coatings have to be dried and sixty three percent of Heidelberg’s 40-inch multiple-coating unit presses are equipped with Heidelberg Dry Star UV Combination Dryer, which is designed to optimize sheet travel and maintain top output with maximum drying and curling.
Davis-Standard Curtain Slide Coater
Davis-Standard’s Liquid Coating Group offers its latest development, a curtain slide coater, which applies single layer coating at 2800 fpm with expansion capabilities up to two additional layers. Davis-Standard combines standard components with customized features to fulfill customer requirements for multiple liquid coating applications and also offers a five-roll Silicone Coater capable of applying 100 percent silicone at 2400 fpm.
Retroflex Wax Coating
Retroflex offers temperature-controlled wax coating lines to apply dry or wet wax for end products including sandwich wraps and wax paper. Its flexographic printer can be located in line to provide a complete coated and printed product in one pass. Retroflex also offers single and two sided coaters that can apply lotions and antibacterial solutions for items like facial tissue and hand wipes. These coaters feature temperature controlled rolls and doctoring chambers to allow for the application of a wide range of fluid formulations.
Scodix Ultra Digital Enhancement Press
The Scodix Ultra Digital Enhancement Press can support a wide array of applications, including stationery, book covers, premium packaging, marketing and promotional tools, greeting cards and photo albums. The Ultra can produce 1,250 B2+ (21.5 x 31.0 inches) size sheets per hour and is based on Scodix’s SENSE technology, which provides added visual and tangible elements to printed material.
Hazen Paper Has Envirofoil
Hazen Paper Company’s Envirofoil packaging is a recyclable, biodegradable substrate that can reduce aluminum use by up to 95 percent compared to foil lamination and laminate by 99 percent compared to 48-guage metallized film-laminated paperboard. The carrier film is reusable, enhancing the environmental aspects of its application. Envirofoil also provides twice the reflectivity of traditional foil board, works well for carton filling, is crack resistant and light weight.
Thelamco Specialty Laminations
Thelamco offers special specialty laminations, which allow package printers to design in an environmentally-conscious manner with high quality designs. Laminations are available for items including metallic paper, paperboard or transfer holographic materials. Thelamco also offers metallized products for UV offset printing and other packaging and commercial print applications.
