Digital Corrugated Printing Shines in Excellence Awards

The diversity of entries into each year’s packagePRINTING Excellence Awards is just part of what makes this competition, well … excellent. We of course have several categories for the conventionally printed packaging applications that have wowed our judging panel for more than three decades. But as printing technologies evolve, we’ve been sure to include new types of printed packaging that are making waves in the industry.
For example, as digital printing has become an increasingly accepted method of package printing, it has made its way into all of the major packaging segments. But most recently it seems, the corrugated industry has been increasingly implementing the technology.
In last year’s Excellence Awards, we had impressive entries in both digital preprinted corrugated and digital direct printed corrugated categories. On the preprinted side, first place went to Kaweah Container of Visalia, Calif., for the corrugated package it printed for Rosemont Farms Brussels Sprouts pictured above. The package was printed using an HP PageWide T400S press and demonstrates the detail that can be achieved on digital preprinted corrugated.
During drupa 2016, single-pass, direct-to-board inkjet printing for corrugated emerged as an exciting new technology for the packaging industry. Only a select few converters have adopted the technology, and Abbott-Action of Attleboro, Mass., is already demonstrating just how powerful direct-to-board inkjet can be. The promotional Spiderman display above earned first place in last year’s Excellence Awards, and was produced on a Barberán Jetmaster 1890, one of the pioneering single-pass, digital corrugated presses.
